Fun Family Trips to Try on a Weekend in Hermosa Beach

By 9  am on

Hermosa Beach is a charming, picturesque getaway that’s perfect for families, kids, and pets. If you have plans for a weekend trip here anytime soon, you’ll love that many local activities, sights, and delicious goodies can be enjoyed conveniently within a 1.4-square-mile area. Read on for our recommendations for things to consider during a weekend family trip to the beautiful California community of Hermosa Beach.

Head to the Beach

The simplest way to have a weekend full of family fun is to go to the city beach. During the warmer times of the year, the main beach here has plenty of sand and open spaces where kids are welcome to build sandcastles and splash in the water. Every member of the family can enjoy an assortment of other beach activities throughout the weekend, including:

• Swimming and/or paddleboarding
• Surfing
• Sand volleyball

Lifeguards are on duty as well for your added peace of mind. There’s also a kid’s play area.

Give Beach Sledding a Try

If you haven’t been beach sledding, you’re in for a real treat in Hermosa Beach. All you need is a supportive sled and some sand along downward-facing areas, and you’ll be all set. In Hermosa Beach, there are sand berms that extend from both sides of the big pier, so this is a good place to have some beach sledding fun.

Check Out Local Playgrounds

Aside from instantly appealing to kids, many of the local playgrounds in the area also allow pets—but make sure to check first. Recently renovated, the South Park Playground is a true paradise if you’ll be coming here with kids. Features include:

• Giant cement slides
• Various climbing setups with fun designs
• A big lawn that’s ideal for family fun

Valley Park also has a nice playground area as well as picnic tables. If you go to the top of the playground at Fort Lots-o-Fun Park, there’s a great ocean view, and Seaview Parkette is good for younger kids, since it’s gated all around.

Sample the Local Treats, Goodies, & Dishes

La Playita comes highly recommended for family dining, since it’s on the casual side. There’s also a public park nearby, so your kids can burn off excess energy before or after eating. Martha’s 22nd Street Grill comes highly recommended if you need a place to get a good breakfast before starting your weekend fun. Later in the day, treat everyone to something sweet at the Soo Good Snack Bar or The Baked Bear.

Rent E-Bikes & Explore

One other way to make a family trip to Hermosa Beach even more fun is to take advantage of Hermosa Beach e-bike rentals for everyone. Electronic bikes give you all the perks of regular bikes with added pedal power. E-biking is a great way to explore without much exertion, so you and your family can enjoy:

• E-biking along The Strand (the paved pathway by the pier) to nearby Manhattan Beach or Redondo Beach
• E-biking your way through town to get a feel for the sights or do a little shopping

  • E-biking along Pier Avenue if you prefer to be right in the hub of all the local hustle and bustle
    • E-biking your way over to the local farmers’ market on Valley Drive
