UPF Clothing

Just like how sunscreen has a SPF rating that measures how effective it is at repelling sunlight, clothes have a UPF rating that measures the same thing.

All clothes protect your skin from the sun, but some are specially designed to block sunlight much better than your average t-shirt. You’ll know if a piece of clothing is UPF rated because it will have a UPF rating just like a SPF rating, typically in the range of 15 to 50.

Light Colors

You don’t have to buy a new wardrobe to make yourself comfortable in the sun. There are easy options like wearing clothes that are a light color.

Simply put, the darker your clothes the more sunlight they’ll absorb. While that may seem like a good thing, dark clothes will heat up faster as they absorb light. As they warm up, you will too, which means you get to spend less time in the sun.

A Ventilated Hat

It’s easy to see why you need to cover your head on a sunny day, but covering your head means more than just keeping the sun off it.

One way to prevent overheating is wearing a ventilated hat that keeps the sun off your head while allowing air to flow through it. There are many different types of ventilated hats, but as long as it gives you coverage and air flow then any hat will serve you well!

Moisture Wicking Clothing

Whether it’s cold or hot, you’ll want to be dry while outside. Moisture wicking clothing helps you do that regardless of the weather.

Some materials, like cotton, hold on to moisture whether it comes from around you or your body in the form of sweat. Moisture wicking materials, like merino wool, pull moisture away from your skin so that it doesn’t stick to you and you stay dry.

If you’ve felt how much hotter it is on a humid day compared to a dry one, then you know how important it is to stay dry. Do so with moisture wicking clothing!

Neck Coverage

Your neck is constantly exposed to the sun while wearing normal clothing, which makes it easy to be burnt. Not only is a sunburn painful, but the extra heat on your neck will make you uncomfortable.

Many hats add neck coverage, but you can also cover your neck with a hood or neck gaiter. If you go the neck gaiter route, then you can drench it in cold water to stay cool!
