3 Easy Ways to Protect Animals and the Environment

As much as the Beach Bound team loves the city lights of Hermosa Beach, we know that our home would be nowhere near what it is without the stunning natural environment that surrounds it.

From the smallest insects in the dirt to the largest whales in the ocean, we want to protect and strengthen the ecosystem we call home so that the animals here can continue to thrive and amaze us for decades to come. That’s why we are proud supporters of the Humane Society of the United States, which not only advocates for the ethical and humane treatment of animals in captivity but also for those in the wild.

To help you contribute to the effort, the Beach Bound team has listed 3 easy steps you can take right now to do the same! Check them out below, and don’t forget to stop by the Beach Bound shop for all your beach and bike rentals in Hermosa Beach!

Find a Local Charity and Support it

We know that many of the people who enjoy Hermosa Beach are visitors, but that doesn’t mean you can’t support and protect animals at home.

After your visit to Hermosa Beach, find a local charity that advocates for fair treatment of animals, either wild, captive, or both, and support it however you can. One of our favorite Southern California animal focused charities is Seal Beach Animal Care Center, which provides a home for animals who have none and a chance to find one forever.

Whether it’s a local humane society or a wildlife foundation that focuses on protecting a certain type of wildlife native to your home, there are thousands of charities to support!

Avoid Single-Use Plastics

Plastics are prized for their durability and low cost to produce, but that’s also why they can be so damaging to the environment. Most plastics do not breakdown once they’ve been dumped into a landfill, and the ones that do take much longer than paper products to decompose.

No matter where you live, plastics in the environment are a problem for wildlife. They are especially problematic for ocean wildlife since plastic often finds its way into the ocean where wildlife can confuse it for food or even be caught in it. Even if a plastic breaks down in the ocean, the small pieces it becomes end up inside wildlife through feeding.

That’s why we encourage everyone to minimalize the use of single-use plastics to the best of their abilities. For example, during your next trip to the beach don’t use a Styrofoam cooler that you’ll throw away at the end of the day. Instead, buy or rent a reusable cooler that you’ll be able to use many times.
If you’re looking for a place to rent a beach cooler, then Beach Bound has plenty in stock that are available to rent online!

Support Humane Brands

We all need to eat, and that means that animals need to be farmed for reliable access to food. However, you can support brands that raise farm animals humanely.

For example, when picking out eggs at the grocery store you’ll see many different labels like “cage free” or “free range.” Determining whether the animals were raised in the conditions described on the packaging can be tough since brands define them differently, but if you take the time to research a brand and make sure they raise animals in conditions that you consider humane then you’ll go a long way to helping them!

This goes beyond the grocery store too. Many products, such as makeup, involve animal testing, but there are brands which completely avoid animal testing if you’re willing to look for them.
